If you're middle-aged and your memory's not what it used to be, check the bathroom scale, researchers warned, suggesting overweight people tend to score more poorly on tests of memory than their thinner peers do.
The findings suggest that a heavier weight in middle age may mean a higher risk of dementia later in life.
Reporting in the journal Neurology, the researchers speculated that higher rates of cardiovascular disease or diabetes might help explain the link. But it's also possible that substances produced by fat cells, such as the hormone leptin, have direct effects on the brain.
The study compared mental abilities to body mass index (BMI), a
measurement of weight in relation to height used to define overweight and obesity. A BMI of 25 or more indicates overweight, and 30 or more is obese.
The study also investigated the relationships between BMI and cognitive function in 2,223 healthy men and women between the ages of 32 and 62 in France through the use of four cognitive tests.
The study found a higher BMI was associated with lower cognitive test scores. Results from a test involving word memory recall show people with a BMI of 20 remembered an average of nine out of 16 words, while people with a BMI of 30 remembered an average of seven out of 16 words.

smoking
smoking should be prohibited, for the world health organization point out that disease linked to smoking kills at least 2,500,000 people each year.
smoking leads to not only lung cancer, but many other diseases such as heart attacks, sore throat, headache, chronic bronchitis, etc.
smoking not only is harmful to the smokers themselves, but also results in the deaths of non-smokers. statistics show that passive smoking is causing 3000 to 5000 lung cancer deaths a year among american non-smokers. an american scientist estimated that smokers who smoke average a package a day for 20 years will lose about eight years of their lives.
smoking makes the indoor environment far more polluted than the outdoor environment.
pregnant women who smoke run the risk of having deformed babies.
smoking is an expensive habit, for a smoker who consumes a package of cigarettes a day will have to spend at least 300 yuan each month, more than one third of average salary in china.
children exposed to parental cigarette smoking are put at a higher risk of developing lung diseases later in their lives.
in the countryside, some smokers share the same pipe, which is even unhealthier. smoking speeds up the process of aging.
smoking not only pollutes the air but also makes the streets dirty, for some smokers flick the ash off their cigarettes and throw the cigarette ends everywhere. smokers help increase the revenue of the
government.
nicotine can produce tranquilizing effect during high emotional situation, therefore helps to calm people down, and wipe out their loneness and fatigue. smokers should have the right to keep their habits.

many things in this world find neither an answer nor a proper explanation. for example, why should two become a couple among the billions of people on earth? why don't they love each other even though they live together everyday, and yet one of them falls in love with someone else at the first sight?
people remain puzzled in spite of their great effort to understand the endless questions, so they invented the all-embracing word “predestination”. have you heard about the sayings like: “predestination will definitely bring you together despite the great distance while without predestination, you’ll never know each other even though you are standing face to face.”
in fact, the so-called “predestination” is often a kind of coincidence, even a kind of accident. does anyone know anything about his previous life or his after life? what could he do even if he knew them? giving up today is the same as giving up tomorrow.
predestination needs us to strive for; friendship needs us to maintain; good will needs us to treasure and future needs us to create. (there is no savior, nor goddess of mercy who once saved people in the past but cannot do anything to help the people at the present.)
(predestination is a lovely word which we should treasure and respect.) in the present world, we should always follow the win-win or multi-win policy, instead of being single-handed. we might as well call the communication, the cooperation, the common concerns and the common aspirations of human beings “predestination”e's question: do you believe predestination in your future?
answers: thank you for your questions. to be honest, although i deeply know that there is no goddess of mercy who once saved people in the past but cannot do anything to help people at the present, sometimes i still believe predestination is truly exist, and i always add some colurs of emotions. it does not mean that i’m not respect science. talking about predestination, it's just a kind of explanation about what
has happened. so the most important thing we should do is to strive for and treasure predestination, then spare our no efford to work together.
大學(xué)生英語演講稿5
When I saw the titile of this essay I am supposed to be writing about, all I felt were its broadness and abstractness. Though I am a Chinese myself, it had always seemed complicated to tell how much exactly my nationality meant to me until that unforgettable experience in the Chinese Embassy at the U.K, which made a significant difference to my life. Only when I was abroad did I realize how proud I always was for my great country and clarify the relationship between China and me, referring it to that between a mother and a child desperate for help.
It was in the London Heathrow International Airport that our passports and airplane tickets were stolen a few minutes before the plane took off. Despaired and tired as we were, we wandered on the flourishing streets of London and felt isolated from all the nearby lighthearted laughters. It didn't take a long time for the lingering homesickness hit us and reminded us of the Chinese Embassy at the U.K that might be our sheet anchor. Ages passed while we walked to the embassy, suffering from hunger and helplessness with every step we took. Sure enough, our eyes were unconsciously filled with tears when we finally reached the spot. I was taken by surprise when the brightly-colored Chinese national flag broke through the darkness and appeared once again in front of my eyes, recalling all the pleasure I had at home. It suddenly felt as if I was taken home, a home where all my fear and anxiety vanished and replaced by the hope and warmth that ran all over my body to cheer me up. The ambassadors were all amiable Chinese officers and the familiar Chinese accent drew me closer to my motherland where we received the only help. The ambassadors made us noodles in the familiar Chinese way and settled the accommodation for us. I had tears running down my cheeks when the hot noodles, smelled as pleasant as my mother's at home, filled my stiff empty stomach because I knew I was safe in the arms of my compatriots and there was no need to be worried anymore for I knew I was home.
We successfully returned to Beijing the next day and I still couldn't forget the moment when I felt so much closer to my motherland than any other time given, as though our hearts were beating in one melody. Had my motherland not saved the day, we would never came back home so quickly without any restriction. For that one brief second when I was handed the brand new passport with a Chinese flag printed on it, my heart was overflowed with the pride for my own nation because never has a country I known connected to its people so close as the way my motherland and us related. I was like a child, crying and desperate for help while my mother China is the harbor to hold me, this small vulnerable boat. Even though I was out of home, my motherland remained inseparated from me no matter how far I go and is always there to help me back on track whenever in need. I wish you a happy birthday, China. I am so proud of you not only because of your obvious amazing pace in economical development, but also due to the relieved and warm way I felt when I was abroad and enjoyed your ray of love shone on my body and heart. You are the spirits dancing in my blood, the strength holding up my body and and essence making up my soul. I am so honored as a Chinese, a member of this dynamic and loving country. For your development and future, it is my responsibility to settle you safely through all the numerous difficulties until we finally make it to the bank where happinese and prosperity is waiting. I love you, China, my dearest mother!

It seems that many people today are overweight. No one wants to carry around extra pounds, lout few people know how to slum down effectively. They look for miracle pills and magic cures. In the end, they fail and the pounds come back. But the most effective way of losing weight is actually very simple. It is a combination of a good diet and proper exercise. What makes it work is determination. It requires discipline and commitment to succeed. Here is an example that proves the truth of these words.
My aunt had been trying to lose weight for years. She went on one diet after another, but none of them worked. She lost a lot of weight quickly only to have it come back. Finally, she followed her doctor's advice and began to eat a simple, well-balanced diet. She ate lots of fruits and vegetables and avoided high-fat foods. In addition, she joined an exercise class. She worked out three times a week. At first, my aunt wasn't happy because the weight came off so slowly. But her classmates encouraged her to stick to it and eventually she reached her goal. Best of all, she was able to stay at her ideal weight. That was because she had developed healthy new habits.
大學(xué)生英語演講稿8
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. Today I would like to begin with a story.
There was once a physical 1) therapist who traveled all the way from America to Africa to do a 2) census about mountain 3) gorillas. These gorillas are a main attraction to tourists from all over the world; this put them severely under threat of 4) poaching and being put into the zoo. She went there out of curiosity, but what she saw strengthened her determination to devote her whole life to fighting for those beautiful
creatures. She witnessed a scene, a scene taking us to a place we never imaged we've ever been, where in the very depth of the African rainforest, surrounded by trees, flowers and butterflies, the mother gorillas 5) cuddled their babies.
Yes, that's a memorable scene in one of my favorite movies, called Gorillas in the Mist, based on a true story of Mrs. Dian Fossey, who spent most of bet lifetime in Rwanda to protect the ecoenvironment there until the very end of her life.
To me, the movie not only presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as a 6) timeless reminder that we should not develop the tourist industry at the cost of our ecoenvironment.
Today, we live in a world of prosperity but still threatened by so many new problems. On the one hand, tourism, as one of the most
promising industries in the 21st century, provides people with the great opportunity to see everything there is to see and to go any place there is to go. It has become a lifestyle for some people, and has turned out to be the driving force in GDP growth. It has the magic to turn a backward town into a wonderland of prosperity. But on the other hand, many problems can occur---natural scenes aren't natural anymore. Deforestation to heat lodges is devastating Nepal. Oil spills from tourist boats are polluting Antarctica. Tribal people are forsaking their native music and dress to listen to U2 on Walkman and wear Nike and Reeboks.
All these 7) appalling(令人震驚的) facts have brought us to the
realization that we can no longer stand by and do nothing, because the very thought of it has been 8) eroding(侵蝕) our resources.
Encouragingly, the explosive growth of global travel has put tourism again in the spotlight, which is why the United Nations has made 20xx the year of ecotourism, for the first time to bring to the world's attention the benefits of tourism, but also its capacity to destroy our
ecoenvironment.
Now every year, many local ecoenvironmental protection
organizations an: receiving donations--big notes, small notes or even coins--from housewives, 9) plumbers(水管工人), ambulance drivers,
salesmen, teachers, children and 10) invalids(殘疾人), Some of them can not afford to send the money but they do. These are the ones who drive the cabs, who nurse in hospitals, who are suffering from ecological
damage in their neighborhood. Why? Because they care. Because they still want their Mother Nature back. Because they know it still belongs to them.
This kind of feeling that I have, ladies and gentlemen, is when it feels like it, smells like it, and looks like it, it's all coming from a scene to remember, a scene to recall and to cherish.
The other night, as l saw the moon linger over the land and before it was sent into the invisible, my mind was filled with songs. I found myself humming softly, not to the music, but to some- thing else, someplace else. a place remembered, a place untouched, a field of grass where no one seem to have been except the deer.
And all those unforgettable scenes strengthened the feeling that it's lime for us to do something, for our own and our coming generation. Once again, I have come to think of Mrs. Dian Fossey be- cause it's with her spirit, passion, courage and strong sense of our
ecoenvironment that we are taking our next step into the world.
And no matter who we are, what we do and where we go, in our mind, there's always a scene to remember, a scene worth our effort to protect it and fight for it.
Thank you very much.
Thanks,contestant#18.The topic for your impromptu speech is:Which is more important for you: knowledge from books or personal experience? Answer: Thank you. I remember, on my very first day of my beloved
university, one of my professors said to me,“From now on, you’ll be on a journey between who you think you are and who yo can be.The key is to allow yourself to continue the journey in the ocean of the books.”And I do learn a lot from books: I know the geometry of Euclid, logic of
Aristotle, fable of Aesop known to children around the world. Well, no
offense to all those great authors of the books, but during my three years at my university, I do realize that personal experience through practice means more to me. As we are in this global information age where both economic growth and individual opportunity are based on ideas, a commitment to providing all human beings the golden opportunity to
develop themselves is so vital, not only to the people here, but all around. As we are in this transformational age where communications and commerce are global, investments are mobile, technology is almost magical, and the ambition for a better life is now universal, and I think this is why we are here today. We want to earn our personal experience through practicing our oral English, sharing our opinions of tourism and ecology with all the judges and audience here. And I think we are so lucky to be alive at this moment of the history. Never before have our
nation enjoyed so much prospertity and so much social progress with so little internal crises. And never before have our young people had so much great opportunity to practice ourselves and, therefore, have a profound obligation to build a more perfect nation of our ancestor’s dream. And I think our government had provided us young people with the tools and condition to build the future of our dreams. Even if we
know some rules, some regulations, or experiences from our books, we still simply cannot graft it onto today’s busier, more impersonal,
complicated world. Instead, our challenges is to arrive at a consensus values and common vision of what we can do today individually and
collectively to build a strong family and strong community, and above all, make the world a better place for us to live. Thank you very much.
Contestant#18, in your speech, you talked about ecotourism. Could you explain to us difference between ordinary tourists and e-tourists, or ecotourists?
Answer: Thank you for your question. And I think the key issue is the differences between our awareness. Fot example, if you want to go to a place to have a trip, enjoy your trip. And I think before you get on board, get on the bus, you can have the awareness that “I’m not a polluter, but an environment keeper.” We’re not go to all those scenic spots to
destroy all those beautiful scenes but we to appreciate the Mother Nature giving us so much things. Thank you very much.
Contestant #18,now that information technology is becoming more and more accessible to people in China, do you think books will become less and less important?
Answer: Well, I think, maybe, umm, I don’t think that all those
technologies can replace the importance of books. We’re in our modern village where so many new industries—IT industries, tourism
industries—crop up every day and this brave new world seem a little bit dehumanizing and inhospitable to a lot of people. The world can no
longer be defined as a place on a map or list or people in organizations but I think the true value, the essence of our village remains the same.It is the network of values relationship that support our lives and we can learn those things from our books because books is the very first beginning stage of what we learn. Thank you very much.
I’d like to ask you a question about your prepared speech, please. You mention that the UN has declated the year 20xx, I think it was, “The Year of Ecotourism.” Do you think that such gestures really serve a purpose? Answer: And I think one of my teachers said to me, when I prepared my prepared speech, and he tells me that if we pay more attention to
something like environmental protection or ecotourism, it is more, it is better for us to bear in mind we should learn something in our hearts, we should have something about the awareness about how to pay more respect to our environment, not to talk about something orally but to
bear something in our hearts. Follow our hearts, our environment can be better.Thank you very much.

Today I am very glad to be here to share with you my ideas of success. What is success? It is what everyone is longing for.Sometimes success would be rather simple. Winning a game is success; getting a high grade in the exam is success; making a new friend is success; even now I am
standing here giving my speech is somehow also success.
However, as a person’s whole life is concerned, success becomes very
complicated. Is fortune success? Is fame success? Is high social status success? No, I don’t think so. I believe success is the realization of people’s hopes and ideals.Nowadays, in the modern society there are many people
who are regarded as the successful. And the most obvious characteristics of hem are money, high position and luxurious life. So most people believe that s success and all that they do is for this purpose. But the problem is wether it is real success. We all know there are always more money, higher position and better condition in front of us. If we keep chasing them, where is the end? What will satisfy us at last? Therefore, we can see, to get the real Success we must need something inside, which is the realization ofpeople’ hopes and ideals.
Different people have different ideas about success; cause people’s hopes and ideas vary from one another. But I am sure every success is dear to everybody, cause it is not easy to come by, cause in the process of our striving for success, we got both our body and soul tempted, meanwhile we are enlightened by the most valuable qualities of human beings: love, patient, courage and sense of responsibility. These are the best treasures. So now I am very proud that I have this opportunity to stand here speaking to all of you. It is my success, cause I raise up to challenge my hope.
What is success? Everyone has his own interpretation as I do. But I am sure every success leads to an ever-brighter future. So ladies and gentlemen, believe in our hopes, believe in ourselves, we, every one of us, can make a successful life! Wish you all good success!

“If I could reach higher, just for one moment to touch the sky…”---this is from my favorite song Reach.
When we are appreciating the passionate melody of Gloria Estefan, we could hardly imagine that she could return to the stage after her paralysis. In the year 1990,
this Cuban singer was knocked down in a traffic accident, and the doctor declared that she might never walk again. But Gloria did not give up and kept up constant exercising. Just one year after the disaster, she stood up again and presented this encouraging song at the Atlanta Olympics.
Whenever I think of Gloria, I can’t help recalling my memory seven years ago, when I first entered university. Naturally shy, ordinary looking, average scores in study, just like an ugly duckling, I seemed to be the least outstanding one in my class. And the successive failures in the beginning led me into despair. “Am I destined to take the back seat to others?” Unwilling to submit to the fate, I paid more efforts on my study as well as many other activities, film dubbing, recital, drama… cause I just want to catch every little opportunity to prove myself. Constant effort yields sure success. Thanks to the competition, I received some awards and most of all, I gained the courage and confidence to face any difficulties in my life journey.
Life is just like farming, and what you can reap depends a lot on your sowing and dedication. Once you have a dream, don’t be hesitant. Your next difficult step may be the one to the top. Keep going forward, even in the toughest time, and never give up.

Good morning everyone ,befor our class,I’m going to share something about basketball ,something about NBA.
As one of millions NBA fans ,I’ve been watching NBA games for about six
years ,for ,as you know ,the NBA court is really an amazing place where miracles happen frequently.Especially when there is a buzzer beater taking place at the end of zhe game ,it’s absolutely the most excting point in the game. Do you
know how popular the NBA is in China? Look at these pictures , celebrities from different fields are watching the game in the stadium. And this picture reflects how popular it is among college students.
No one may have never heared something about Kobe ,lenbron James ,jaordan, but I believe not everyone know the origin of basketball.
Dr.James Naismith, a Canadian who was teaching at Springfield College in Massachusetts needed to come up with a game to entertain the school’s rugby and football players during the winter months.
So he grabbed a peach basket he found in the janitor’s closet of the school and hung it on a railing about ten feet from the floor.
Every time the players made a shot though, they had to take down the basket and grab the ball, which became really annoying. Dr.Naismith decided to cut a hole in the basket so the ball would go straight through without having to dig it out all the time
The sport was an instant success and the popularity of this new game quickly grew. Althoough Nasimith never saw the game develop into the spectacular game we know these days, he had the honor to witness basketball become an Olympic sport at the 1936 Games held in Berlin.
A group of team owners met on June 6, 1946, in New York to talk about a league they would name the Basketball Association of America. This meeting was the beginning of what we know today as the NBA.
NBA’s full name is National Basketball Association
And today there are 30 teams in the association .And in recent days the regular season has began. And the games are very excting .If you have any interst , you could watch them in the morning everyday.

Independence Day 20xx Speech
Good morning India!
Today on 15th August 20xxIndia is celebrating its 67th Independence Day, and we Indians are proud to say we have owned our freedom 67 years old back. As we gather here today I take the opportunity to congratulate every student and teacher of this School/college a Happy Independence Day! I also take the opportunity of welcoming you our chief guest for today! We have assembled here to celebrate our 67th Independence Day.
As a citizen of India, I am so proud to talk to you about my mother India. On the night of August 14, 1947, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru rose to make a maiden speech in New Delhi, “When the world sleeps, India will wake to life and freedom.” Yes, India became free from the bondage of British rule. Now, India is the largest democratic country in the world. The country’s strength is to find, “Unity in diversity”. But, there are stray incidents that test her secularism but the people of India are ready to sacrifice anything for the cause of unity. Today we remember the great leaders who gave their lives for the nation’s freedom and prosperity. Dr. B.R.Ambedkar gave the longest written constitution to us. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru worked for an industrialized India. Gandhi Ji taught us Ahimsa and Non-violence. Subash Chandra Bose inducted courage in us. Swami Vivekanand gave us spiritual power. Yes, with these contributions; India will be the super power in the coming years. Our former President Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam called the children of India to dream to build a strong Nation with aim and perseverance. Indeed! This is not a word of a single man. It is word of one billionsouls.
Jai Hind!

Change The Ingredients Of Your Life
This is a glass of water, tasteless, right? However if you add sugar, it will taste sweet, but if you add vinegar, it will become bitter. The same is true with our life____ the flavor is created by our choices.
If kindness is added to a strange you will have a friend; but if hostility is added, you will have an enemy. If love is added to a pile of red bricks you will have a home, but if hatred is add to those bricks , you will have an concentration camp.
So my dear friends, never complain that life is boring and the world is disappointing. If don’t like the taste of your life, change the ingredients.
Three year ago, I weighed more than 100 hundred kilograms which caused significant embarrassment and frustration in my life. Like always failing my P.E examinations, like always being laughed at by girls, like being terrified to speak in public. It was my grandmother’s encouragement that revived from my passive attitude to become confident in myself. She said “ My dear, if you can’t change you figure, why not treat it as your own style. So I began to cautiously employ the new way of thinking. By choosing to change my outlook on life, I developed the confidence to make a difference and finally I found a totally new world.
So my dear friend, if faith, hope, love, endurance are added to your life, you will find the confidence to conquer your limitation and embrace new challenges. And hopefully with my speech included, you will have a fantastic speech contest.

The first time I saw a square watermelon, my hair stood on end. Years ago a Japanese came up with the idea of square watermelons because he thought it would save more space. Intelligent and effective as it is, have you ever thought about how tragic it is for the watermelon?
I can't imagine that poor fruit's childhood, being imprisoned and limited in a dark cubic cell, not even able to stretch its arms and legs. Because only in this way, can it truly become a square watermelon.
Unfortunately, isn't this the way we grew up? Under the pressure of being forced to strive for one goal after another, we almost became identical. However, at the same time, there is still a bunch of people, careless of the dark cell, following their passion, their dreams.
Maybe there is not a "right" or "wrong" between being forced by pressure or following your dream. I mean, pressure can make things going in an effective, though boring, way. By contrast, passion and dreams enrich your life, though sometimes it's risky to stick to them. Nevertheless, Ladies and gentlemen, following your dream with passion is what everyone should choose to do.
Let me explain it this way.
My grandmother was very shocked when she found out that I know what my cousin sister is doing simply by clicking on her blog. Hesitating for a little while, though, She asked for my help and decided to start her "social network life" at the advanced age of 85.
Think about this, A woman didn't give up her passion, and tried not to fall behind, even almost in the evening of her life. What supported her is her passion and her dream. The sad truth is that not everyone is able to enjoy this part of life. When they become old, or, as some would say, when they become mature, their mind is imprisoned into a box, partly by society, partly by themselves. They have tons of things they must do also tons of things they must not do. In essence, thousands of millions of people are becoming like square melons with an imprisoned mind.
This reminds me of a book I once read called "Brave New World". In the story, the world in 2532 is highly efficient, stable and prosperous. People are classified before they are born, when they are from the same family they will have the same face, the same abilities and same future. That’s a world in which there’s no passion or dream. Only pressure and and striving.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is the world we could end up in, if we allow ourselves to be blocked in, like the square melons.
