       Television Today

      Whole generations are growing up addicted to television.  Food is left uneaten,homework undone and sleep is lost. Television is a universal pacifier.  It is now standard practice for mother to keep the children quiet by putting them in the living room and turning on the set. It doesn't matter that the children watch rubbishy commercials or spectacles of sadism and violence--so long as they are quiet. There is a limit to the amount of creative talent available in the world. Every day, television consumes vast quantities of creative work. That is why most of the programs are so bad; it is impossible to keep pace with the demand and maintain high standards as well. When millions watch the same programs, the whole world becomes a village, and society is reduced to the conditions which obtain in preliterate communities. We become utterly dependent on the two most primitive media of communication: pictures and the spoken word.

     Television encourages passive enjoyment. We become content with second-hand experiences. It is so easy to sit in our armchairs watching others working. Little by little, television cuts us off from the real world. We get so lazy, we choose to spend a fine day in semi-darkness, glued to our sets, rather than go out into the world itself, Television may be a splendid medium of communication, but it prevents us from communicating with each other.

    一代又一代的人在迷戀于電視中長(zhǎng)大。飯沒(méi)來(lái)得及吃，作業(yè)沒(méi)來(lái)得及做，覺(jué)也沒(méi)有睡足。電視成了人們慣用的撫慰工具。母親為了不讓孩子們吵鬧，將他們趕到起居室，然后打開(kāi)電視，這已成了通行的做法。只要孩子們不吵不鬧，他們是看“垃圾”商業(yè)廣告還是施虐和暴力場(chǎng)景，那都無(wú)關(guān)緊要了。人世間的創(chuàng)造力是有一定限度的。  日復(fù)一日，電視消耗掉大量的創(chuàng)造力。這就是大多數(shù)節(jié)目何以如此糟糕的原因；既滿(mǎn)足需求同時(shí)又保持高標(biāo)準(zhǔn)，那是不可能的。當(dāng)數(shù)以百萬(wàn)計(jì)的人觀看著相同的電視節(jié)目的時(shí)候，整個(gè)世界就變成了一個(gè)村落，社會(huì)也就退化到文字出現(xiàn)前的狀態(tài)。我們完完全全依賴(lài)于兩個(gè)最原始的傳播媒介：圖像和口頭語(yǔ)言。

    電視助長(zhǎng)了消極的享受。我們變得滿(mǎn)足于間接的經(jīng)驗(yàn)。躺在扶手椅中旁觀他人干活再舒心不過(guò)了。逐漸地，電視將我們跟真實(shí)的世界割裂開(kāi)來(lái)。我們變得極為懶惰。在一個(gè)陽(yáng)光燦爛的日子，我們寧愿呆在昏暗的屋子內(nèi)，眼睛死盯著電視不放，而不愿走出去投身真實(shí)的大自然之中。電視或許是一種極好的傳媒，但它阻止了人們
