　　Making friends is a skill like many other skills. It improves with practice. If you want to meet people and make friends, you must be willing to take some actions. You must first go where there are people. You won’t make friends staying home alone. Join a club or a group. Taking with those who like the same things as you do is much easier. Or join someone in some activities. Many people are nervous when talking to new people. After all meeting strangers means facing the unknown. And it’s human nature to feel a bit uncomfortable about the unknown. Most of our fears about dealing with new people come from doubts about ourselves. We imagine other people are judging us of finding us too tall or to short, too this or too that. But don’t forget that they must be feeling the same way. Try to accept yourself as you are and try to put the other person at ease. You’ll both feel more comfortable.

　　Try to be self-comfident even if you don’t feel that way. When you enter a room full of strangers, such as a new classroom, walk tall and straight, look directly at other people and smile.

　　If you see someone you like to speak to, say something . don’t wait for the other person to start a conversation.

　　根據(jù)新聞上說“熱潮由來已久，不僅普通公眾多有怨言，一些專業(yè)人士也紛紛對此提出批評質(zhì)疑。不久前，教育部前發(fā)言人王旭明通過微博呼吁取消小學英語課，令英語教育再次成為大眾關注的話題。實際上，這樣的質(zhì)疑從未平息，20xx年全國兩會期間，畢業(yè)于北京大學英語專業(yè)的全國政協(xié)委員俞敏洪接受記者采訪時明確表示，“中國人從幼兒園就開始學英語，評職稱還考英語，這是很荒謬的事”。中國教育學會會長顧明遠則大聲疾呼：“普通高考要減少考試門數(shù)，可以數(shù)學和語文為主”，對外語有要求的專業(yè)，“外語可參照全國等級考試成績，不必納入高考”。

　　任何語言首先都是一種工具，通過學習語言來滿足人們溝通交往的需要。然而，在傳統(tǒng)的應試教育模式中，英語的溝通屬性大打折扣，充其量不過是升學就業(yè)的“敲門磚”。應試化的英語教學背離了英語教育初衷，不少地區(qū)學校為使學生獲取高分而推行“啞巴英語”和“聾子英語”，即使學生能考出卷面高分，但卻沒有實際交流能力。更為重要的是，雖然學生時代花費了大量時間精力在英語學習上，但多數(shù)人在實際工作中卻很少用到英語，乃至于走出校門不久就將英語“全部還給了老師”。當英語教學徹底淪為應試教育敲門磚的時候，理應對此進行相應改革，從高考源頭做起無疑是一種可行之策。

　　實際上，江蘇高考新政并沒有完全取消英語考試，而是將“一考定終身”調(diào)整為考生每年可參加兩次英語高考，選取成績最高的一次作為高考成績，與此同時，英語考試只計算等級而不計分。顯而易見，一年兩考將大大緩解“一考定終身”的壓力，而英語考級也更多展示出一種素質(zhì)教育的思路——英語并非不再需要，只不過是換了種形式進行考核，如果考生有興趣和需求，完全可以在高考前“過級”，而不必將壓力帶到高考。沒有了考試和升學的壓力之后，“平易近人”的英語也許更容易引起學生溝通交流的興趣，從而使英語教育回歸本意。

　　與任何新生事物一樣，江蘇省此番高考新政仍有亟待補充完善之處，其中，最引人關注的'莫過于，由誰來組織英語考試并計算等級，通過怎樣的程序設計來保障這一新政的公平和公正。除此之外，令人仍心有疑慮的是，英語考試改革本身是為減輕學生的應試壓力，但在應試教育大環(huán)境沒有顯著改善的背景下，英語教學所“節(jié)省”下的時間，是否會迅速被其他學科擠占呢？雖然這些問題已超出英語教學本身，但卻是關系到新政能走多遠的關鍵所在。江蘇高考新政之所以引發(fā)普遍關注，不僅是因為應試英語飽受詬病，同時也是因為公眾希望看到以此撼動應試教育機制的堅冰，希望這是高考改革的序曲，而不是“絕唱”。

In addition to studying the conjunctions, you will also study the punctuation patterns for compound sentences. This chapter will cover three different methods for combining sentences: using a coordinating conjunction, using a conjunctive adverb, or using just a semicolon. By the time you have completed this chapter you should be able to write sentences that varying in length so that your writing has a more flowing style.
