since 1990,there has been tremendous growth in the use of computers by students. while in 1990,the average number of hours a student spent on the computer was about one hour per week,this number grew to nearly four hours per week by 1995,and to approimately 20 hours per week by the year.
this significant growth in the use of computers by students in the 1990s can be attributed to several factors,including widespread usage,lower prices,and technological and social developments. nowadays,computers are widely used by students for word processing,book keeping,multimedia presentations,and access to the internet for both research and communications. additionally,since 1990,due to competition and technological advances,computer hardware and software prices,as well as internet usage charges have dropped significantly. finally,technological developments and changes in social habits in the 1990s have played a major role in this tremendous growth in the use of computers. todays society relies heavily on computers for immediate access to the news and for entertainment,including,listening to music,watching movies and sport events,and playing computer games.
while computers are of great assistance to the students,and therefore,are indispensable tools,they also pose some challenges. the biggest challenge that many students face is discipline in the use of this powerful device. that is,students need to have the discipline of not allowing themselves to be lured by the entertaining aspects of this wonderful tool-aspects that can result in addiction to computer games or viewing of undesirable material on the internet. that is to say,students need to use this powerful tool with great wisdom!

I made a bow to it in my mind， for I felt in the presence of a great monarch. And I was not mistaken. The Yangtze River， as we followed its smooth course up through the immense stretches of flat farm land of coastal China， was one of those rivers which give the impression of being the only true and permanent rulers of the earth.
Rivers perhaps are the only physical features of the world that are at their best from the air. Mountain ranges， no longer seen in profiles， dwarf to anthills; seas lose their horizons;lakes have no longer depth but look like bright pennies on the earth's surface; forests become a thin impermanent film， a moss on the top of a wet stone， easily rubbed off. But rivers，which from the ground one usually sees only in cross sections，like a small sample of ribbon -- rivers stretch out serenely ahead as far as the eye can reach. Rivers are seen in their true stature.
They tumble down mountainsides; they meander through flat farmlands. Valleys trail them; cities ride them; farms cling to them; road and railroad tracks run after them and they remain， permanent， possessive. Next to them， man 's gleaming cement roads which he has built with such care look fragile as paper streamers thrown over the hills easily blown away. Even the railroads seem only scratched in with a penknife. But rivers have carved their way over the earth's face for centuries and they will stay.

Part One of the Writing Test paper will require you to write a message or memo according to the instructions given. Usually a description of the context is given and an indication of the person for whom the message is intended. In addition, 3 tasks are given for you to include in your message, note, or memo.
If you are asked to write a memo, you should not worry about the actual form of the memo. Address your memo to the person mentioned in the instructions (eg Dear Mr Lao or simply Mr Lao) but R isn t necessary for you to include any other details such as an address, or a date in memos for this test.
As you will see from the following example, you should try to write between 30 and 40 words. Try to keep to this number of words, but, if you write a few words more than 40 words, don t worry about going back and crossing out part of what you have written. Conversely, 2 or 3 words under 30 should not result in any loss of marks though several fewer words may lead to fewer marks being given.
You work for a company which manufactures pocket calculators, electronic diaries and world-time clocks. You have arranged to give a, sales presentation of these products but you know that the people attending your presentation are interested chiefly in pocket calculators.
